Rubicon Coaching
Taking you to the next level

To "cross the Rubicon" is an idiomatic expression that refers to making a crucial and irrevocable decision or taking a decisive action that commits someone to a particular course of action. It originated from a historical event when Julius Caesar, a Roman general, crossed the Rubicon River in 49 BC with his army, defying the Roman Senate's orders not to bring armed forces into Rome. This act marked the point of no return, as it initiated a civil war and ultimately led to Caesar's rise to power in ancient Rome. The phrase "crossing the Rubicon" for Rubicon Coaching means going where you haven't gone before and going to where you want to go without looking back.

Choosing Truth Over Being Liked: A Better Way to Build Client Trust

Last week, I said something honest in a meeting—something I knew might not be popular. I noticed the shift immediately. A pause. A flicker of surprise. My old instinct kicked in fast, urging me to soften it, explain it away, or make it smaller so everyone stayed comfortable.

But this time, I didn’t.

And while the moment felt uncomfortable, it also felt freeing.

For much of my life—and certainly in my career—I used likability as a safety strategy. I learned how to read a room, smooth conversations, and keep things agreeable. In the mortgage world, that can look like avoiding tough conversations, over-explaining, or quietly agreeing when you know better. It works on the surface. People like you. Deals move forward.

But here’s the truth: being liked isn’t the same as being trusted.

There’s a quiet exhaustion that comes from constantly managing other people’s comfort while editing yourself down. I realized how often I held back real opinions, avoided gentle disagreement, or softened truths to keep things “easy.” And over time, that costs more than it saves.

So I started small.

I shared a real opinion instead of nodding along. I set clearer expectations with clients. I declined requests without over-apologizing. Each time I chose honesty over likability, I felt two things at once: fear and relief. Fear that I might lose connection—and relief that I was finally telling the truth.

Some people did pull back. They preferred the version of me that kept everything smooth.
But the people who stayed? The relationships deepened.

And that’s the lesson for mortgage loan officers.

Borrowers don’t benefit when we tell them only what they want to hear. They benefit when we explain what’s realistic, what could be challenging, and how to navigate it wisely. Being honest about credit, timelines, pricing, or loan structure may feel risky in the moment—but it builds trust that lasts far beyond the application.

Likability gets approval.

Authenticity creates connection.

When clients trust you, they stay engaged. They listen when challenges arise. They don’t panic at the first underwriting request or shop the loan mid-process. They lean in instead of pulling away—because they believe you’re on their side.
That’s how stronger conversion and pull-through really happen: not through perfection or polish, but through credibility and truth.

Choosing honesty doesn’t mean being blunt or unkind. It means being clear, respectful, and real. It means having the courage to say, “Here’s what I’m seeing,” even when it’s uncomfortable—because your client deserves clarity, not comfort.
I’m learning that the goal isn’t to be liked by everyone. It’s to be trusted by the right people.

The right clients won’t need a softened version of you.

They’ll stay for the truth.

And in this business, trust is the strongest close you’ll ever make.
